BEAUTIFUL DESIGNER KALAMKARI HAND PAINTED SAREES FROM UNNATI SILKS

Kalamkari or Qalamkari is hand painted or block printed textile. It is derived from the Persian ‘drawing with a pen’. There are two styles in India. The Srikalahasthi style which is based on themes of religious hangings, temple engravings, scrolls, deities, scenes from epics etc. based on the influence of Hindu rulers of the Malla dynasty. The Machilipatnam style based on Islam influence of the Mughals and evolved with themes of flora, fauna and nature chosen.

The essential features of Kalamkari
Using Natural dyes mostly, hand block printing is used for the printing of the fabric and the pen used for the finer details and inner filling of colours.

The elaborate process of Kalamkari
The initial weaving of the fabric completed, is when the Kalamkari process takes over. The cotton fabric is immersed in a fine mix of myrobalan ( a resin) and cow’s milk to provide the adhesion of colours. By soaking it for an hour a unique gloss is achieved. It is after this that the finer lines and details are drawn with a bamboo stick styled like a pen soaked in fermented jiggery and water. After this the vegetable dyes are applied. The application of each colour done, the fabric is washed. This leads to the fabric being washed a number of times to see that the colours have adhered and do not spread.
Handloom Sarees
For extra colouring effects substances like cow dung, seeds, crushed flowers and plants are also used. The richness of the colours and the use of natural dyes has slowly given way to lesser vibrancy on account of the use of chemical dyes which are easily and abundantly available.

It mostly has subjects of Gods, temple hangings, epic scenes and other religious themes, in its ‘Kalamkari’. Certain marked features of this style are simplicity, good use of colour with, sharpness in the depictions, and the use of motifs. The other style having Islamic influence uses more of flora and fauna as themes in its work. Natural dyes sarees are employed for colours, in Kalamkari, with cotton, silk, crepe, georgette being the usual fabrics as canvas for this art. Motifs with trees, creepers, flowers, leaves, birds are popular. The hand painting tribal ethnic art of Jharkhand sareesChattisgarh sarees, Bengal and Orissa handlooms demonstrates the fine craft executed with finesse.

It is fairly different from the Kalamkari mentioned above. The tribal artisans paint patterns, motifs, scenes from the epics, tribal dancing, wedding scenes, ordinary village life, animals, birds, floral designs and other subjects and themes on fabrics like pure silk, cotton and sico. They transfer themes onto fabrics using locally available materials, vegetable and organic dyes. They make use of elementary methods of drawing and tracing on the fabric and then painting on them.

The beauty of such art lies in the craftsmanship in fine detailing, right colour combinations, and extraordinarily neat finish that speaks volumes about their unique skills. Batik is a process using ‘resists’ for dyeing a fabric before making designs on it. The resist or physical block prevents these desired areas on the fabric from being penetrated when the fabric is dyed in a vat. Generally wax is used as a resist in Batik. The rarer type of Batik is Pen Batik. Fine designs are made on the fabric using ‘Tjanting’ tools. Molten Wax at a certain temperature is carefully put on the design lines with a Batik dropper pen. The fabric is then dyed in a small tub of prepared colour dye. In both cases care is taken to keep the temperature of the wax between 200 and 230 degrees. After the dyeing process is over and the fabric put in hot water, the wax melts to leave, a neatly dyed and designed fabric.

LATEST WEDDING COLLECTIONS OF BANDHANI SILK SAREES FROM UNNATI SILKS

Bandhani or Bandhini or Bandhej, a highly-skilled process involving Tie-Dye method, has the base fabric tied at several points by threads and then the threads are dyed.

The manner in which the tying is done decides the resulting pattern, which could be Leheriya, Mothra, Ekdali or Shikari.

Patterns which emerge are generally dots, stripes, waves or squares. Dark Colours are employed for dyeing the ‘Bandhani’ and could be organic or man-made chemicals.

Principally applied colours being red, green, blue, black or yellow, the background is generally red or black.

The Khatri community of Kutch in Gujarat is known to excel in Bandhani. Saurashtra in Gujarat, and Rajasthan again have their own style of Bandhani, unique to their regions.

Designs and colours differ, with significance attached to certain colours.

There is a special attraction to the Leheria Bandhej shalwar suits in the Bandhini range known for their unique wave designs, evolving from a brilliant exercise of the tie and dye art that has created waves in the fashion world for the simplicity and appealing look on plain coloured fabrics.

Leheria work is done on silk or cotton fabrics and on long and broad canvases.

The process of getting the unique Leheria or wave design involves rolling the fabric and tying resists at various spots on the cloth and then rolled diagonally from one corner to the opposite selvage.

This rolled fabric is then dyed according to the usual tie and dye process in bright colours.
When the fabric is unfolded after dyeing, it leaves a lot of stripes or other shapes at intervals across the fabric in a design.
Several tie and dye processes are undergone if required, to create a myriad of colourful stripes across the fabric length. Indigo is used in the last few stages of the process.
Mothara is a special ‘lentil design’, popular and achieved by the re-rolling of the unfolded first stage in the opposite direction and the resist tied at the diagonal end and repeating the dye process.
The resulting checkered design has un-dyed areas at regular intervals which are the size of a lentil.
